Official Presentation of the Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra 2025 in Ingenio

El Sequero Sports Pavilion hosted the official presentation of the Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra 2025 this afternoon, a sporting event unlike anything previously held in the Canary Islands, which will take place on 10 and 11 October in the municipality of Ingenio.

The event was attended by Poli Suárez, Regional Minister for Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands; Ángel Sabroso, Deputy Minister for Physical Activity and Sports; and Vanesa Martín, Mayor of Ingenio, among other institutional representatives, sponsors and partners.

A large number of runners and volunteers also attended to hear first-hand the details of an event that is already generating plenty of attention… and is set to generate even more.

The Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra is part of the international circuit of this race format created by Lazarus Lake, and will be held under the motto “El Último Puntal / La Última Puntal”, a clear reference to Canarian Wrestling and to endurance as one of the values that forms part of our identity.

The winner is not the person who finishes first, but the one who is able to keep completing the 6.7 km loop hour after hour, until only one person remains.

During the presentation, Miguel Sánchez, president of Club Arkana Koalas Trail and organiser of the event, explained:

“This race is not just about running. It is a way of discovering our limits with both heart and mind, while celebrating effort, respect and the pride of being a Puntal. A race where the winner is not the first to finish, but the one who refuses to give up: El Último Puntal or La Última Puntal.”

The Mayor of the Villa de Ingenio highlighted:

“Ingenio is not simply hosting a race; it is hosting a human challenge that inspires us as a community.”

To conclude, Regional Minister Poli Suárez stated:

“Events like this show that the Canary Islands are ready to host endurance competitions of the highest level.”

The event will bring together nearly 300 participants across its different categories and will turn Ingenio into the heart of a true celebration of ultrarunning and Canarian sport.

The organisation also expressed its gratitude for the support of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Ingenio Town Council, and all the sponsoring companies and partners whose involvement has made this first edition of the Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra possible.
