Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra 2025 Is Almost SOLD OUT

The first edition of the Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra 2025 is already a success before it has even begun: registration has now closed with numbers just short of a SOLD OUT, confirming the huge interest generated around this unique event in the Canary Islands.

The final official training session at the El Sequero Municipal Sports Hall provided the final spark for many athletes, pushing registrations to the limit in the last few hours.

The entry list reflects the diversity and international reach of the event: participants from across all the Canary Islands will share the start line with athletes from mainland Spain and abroad, with notable representation from the United Kingdom, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania and Latvia. A mix of accents, cultures and different ways of understanding endurance will turn Ingenio into a truly international arena, where every loop will be a shared challenge.

The Backyard Ultra was born in Tennessee, USA, created by Lazarus Lake, who is also behind the legendary Barkley Marathons. Its philosophy is as simple as it is demanding: complete a 6.7 km loop every hour until only one person remains able to continue.

At international level, the current record stands at 119 consecutive hours, almost five full days of racing and 798 kilometres covered. At the Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra 2025, the challenge will be limited to 28 hours and 28 loops, combining the essence of this international format with the local identity of Ingenio and the concept of El Último Puntal or La Última Puntal, inspired by Canarian Wrestling.

The event will feature different race formats designed for all types of participants: the Ultra, where only El Último Puntal or La Última Puntal will remain standing; the Marathon (7 loops) and the Half Marathon (3 loops), where there will be a true battle of the Puntales on the final loop, as runners will be able to conserve their energy and victory will ultimately depend on who is fastest when it matters most.

In addition, the Inclusive category, with an adapted 4.2 km course, will open Saturday’s programme with the aim of making the Backyard experience accessible to everyone.

The organisers, Club Arkana Koalas Trail, have celebrated the response received for this first edition:

The Gran Canaria Backyard Ultra 2025 will take place on 10 and 11 October in the Villa de Ingenio, with the El Sequero Municipal Sports Hall as the heart of the event, where each loop will start and finish.

It will be a weekend where tradition and endurance come together in the same setting to discover who will become El Último Puntal or La Última Puntal.
