The PROVITAL Backyard Ultra – Gran Canaria Moves Its Venue to Ingenio for Safety Reasons

The organisers of the PROVITAL Backyard Ultra – Gran Canaria officially announce a change of venue for the event scheduled for 22 May 2026, due to serious damage caused by storm "Therese" on the island.

The heavy rainfall has caused significant damage to various infrastructure and, directly, to part of the course designed for the race. Specifically, several sections show significant ground deterioration, with loss of surface stability, accumulated debris, and conditions that compromise participant safety.

Over the past few days, the organisation has worked intensively in coordination with the relevant authorities, particularly the Valsequillo de Gran Canaria Town Council, analysing every possible alternative to keep the event at its original location.

However, after a thorough assessment, it was determined that none of the available options could guarantee 100% safety for the runners — a non-negotiable principle for the organisation.

Given this situation, the decision has been made to move the race to the municipality of Ingenio, a venue that successfully hosted the 2025 edition and offers the optimal conditions for running the event properly.

The organisation would like to express its most sincere and heartfelt thanks to the Valsequillo de Gran Canaria Town Council for its involvement, close support, ongoing collaboration and willingness throughout this process, especially in such a complex context arising from the effects of the storm.

We would also like to thank the Ingenio Town Council for its swift response, support and willingness to host this race once again, allowing the PROVITAL Backyard Ultra – Gran Canaria to go ahead and keep the spirit of the event alive.

The race will keep its original format fully intact, characteristic of the international Backyard Ultra circuit: a unique competition where the winner is not the fastest, but the last Puntal standing, the one able to complete one more lap than everyone else.

True to this spirit, the PROVITAL Backyard Ultra – Gran Canaria continues to establish itself as one of the most distinctive endurance events on the sporting calendar, where every lap is an elimination and only the one who endures remains.
